Colors of the Wind? Rainbow? Random search?

Last year when I first mentioned my engagement to a classmate, I was overwhelmed with all sorts of questions regarding details like: What song do you think you’ll dance to? Where will you get married? Do you think you’ll go with a huge ceremony? etc. etc. The question that really has come back to mind lately is “What colors are you going for?” Colors? Is it me or does it seem like a lot will be based on what I decide for that question?

I might be making a bigger deal out of this than I should, but I just don’t want my wedding to be an eye sore. I can just picture how uncomfortable it would be for the guests to sit around a mess of jarring greens and reds and yellows. Maybe that’s one way of saving money– Make their eyes hurt to the point that they want need to go home (and/or the eye doctor) as soon as possible. This in turn means your reception will be shorter, thereby saving you money on the rental of the venue based on the length of time of the event. Let’s ignore how these guests would probably never want to see you again for fear that you might expose them to yet another visual assault.

OK, so with the potential risk of choosing colors worse than you can find on the average MySpace page, here I go at picking a set of colors appropriate for a summer wedding. And yeah, I cheated by using the Brides.com Color Studio wheel, but I feel like it’s one of the better ideas I’ve had to lessen the work I have to do in planning. With my engineering background, I’m more likely able to tell you the color’s frequencies and spectroscopy details than whether they would be nice on a bridesmaid’s dress. So thank goodness for the color wheel!

The first set is labeled as: silver, pink and lilac.

Reading the names of these colors together doesn’t sell me on their combination, but it’s when I saw them together on my monitor that I thought, “heyyy, it’s not so bad.” I actually like it.

I clicked on the wheel again, and although a little similar, I got this second set that I like, too: robin’s egg, lilac and pearl.

Very soft colors, appropriate for summer methinks and they would look cute in the bridesmaids dresses and/or table centerpieces.

A third set I might consider is the ever formal black-and-white softened for a day time event in Miami: silver, pearl and lime.

It’s a little on the plain side, but should my fiancĂ© refuse to go with the colors I’ve chosen, this is his only option. I can’t go any more black-and-white-it’s-so-plain-is-this-a-wedding-or-a-funeral? than this set.

The set I like the most though is the following one: pink, lime and pearl.

If we go with this one, we’ll have to be really careful to get the right shades of pink and lime. The pearl seems safe. The pink and lime could make the whole setting either look like a watermelon or an elegant botanical garden. Cue the doves!

No, seriously, the pink and green will be tricky, but this set has the potential to make the reception look as beautiful as possible on a nice summer day in Miami. What I’m also hoping is that this will make it easier to choose flowers since, you know, pink, green, pearl? Flower colors in themselves!

So what do you think? Should I spend more hours on the color wheel clicking furiously and deciding on a better set? Do you think my pink, green and pearl will be a botanical disaster? And if I do go with this set, should the bridesmaid dresses be pink, green or pearl? So many questions and now I realize that we are only 10 months to the date!

    are you kidding?
    pink and green????
can you PLEASE not fall into the stereotypical 80’s Miami “I’m such a wetback” color scheme. It is tacky, offensive, and clashing. No one will stay for the toast or cake, seriously. All choices would be terrible for the bridesmaid dresses.
I much prefer the pink, lilac, silver combination. It is subdued but varied, almost like a picturesque sunset on a beach…

    Yeah. My 2 cents.

hmm..the pink & green may not be a bad choice…though it’s still kind of difficult to tell until you have an actual mock setup of the items. the grey and pink is nice though :)

Iggy: Geez, thanks for your brutally honest opinion. I knew I could count on you. Christian has also voiced his opinion on how he’s not feeling the pink and green combination. From the looks of it, I will have trash all of these choices and start fresh with his help since he didn’t like any of them. (I guess that’s what I get for just spinning the color wheel.)

Tina: I also thought about how the mock setup would help decide the best scheme, but Christian is not having any of it. He’s all, “These clash on my screen, they will clash in real life.” Oy. I hope this means he will take the planning a little more serious the next time I see him.

If people don’t stay for the toast and cake, that means I get to eat more. I’m up for that.
